Robert Tressell (pen name of Robert Noonan) wrote this novel to help advance the cause of the working class, and it has become a classic among trade unionists and socialists in his native country of Britain and beyond. Comparison is sometimes drawn with Emile Zola’s Germinal which serves a similar purpose in the French labour movement, but is less explicitly socialist than Tressell’s work.
